Canyontubing Report | Bali activity

May 28th, 2009, I tried brand new activity, Canyon Tubing! It looks like as same as a single rafting boat, but the course length is just half of Ayung River (about 4 km) and no need to use oar.
I thought that it’s the kind of healing activity, just flowing as the drift pool and feel easy to enjoy river view. HOWEVER… stay on tune.

Siap River locates up stream of Ayung River. It takes 30 min. from Ubud. In the reception building of canyontubing, there are restaurant, shower, and rocker, etc. all prepared well. They serve morning tea, Bali coffee. After take a break with coffee, fill out the agreement form and pay fees as same as other activities.

Today’s weather is cloudy. And here is mountain side, so little bit chilly… I met the cheerful family!! They come from Australia, and their hobby is triathlon. Safety equipments are only two, life-jacket and helmet. It doesn’t clean, but there is no problem to use.

Guide chooses a life-jacket and helmet to fit body size of each person. It’s really important item for me because I cannot swim. When I’m done to prepare, picture time start! To enjoy adventure, we have to be excited!! Ready to be excited??

Guide chooses a life-jacket and helmet to fit body size of each person.
It’s really important item for me because I cannot swim. I heard that walking distance is short, but it’s not… and really steep slope!!
We have to watch out our steps. I had hard time to walking on dry road, so if it’s rain… It must get muddy.

I thought we arrived, but we still have about 200 steps. We come into dark the jungle, and walk on the wood promenade, then finally, arrive at Siap River!
It’s really unexploded place surrounded by cliffs and ferny road!! I hear “Indiana Jones” BGM in my mind!

All applicants gather in the place, the guide give us instruction and safety information again. The boat is basically for single-ride, but age 7 to 10 child can ride 2 persons in the boat. Looks like, I can find the boat in a playground equipment corner of a home improvement center.

2 to 5 guides support us, depend on the number of applicants. Some of them have water-proof backpacks (left picture), so we can put our valuables in them.

I put one of my camera, but later, I couldn’t find out which backpack I put. Guides also moved around, so I couldn’t take out my camera during activity. I think that if you cannot take out your camera from the backpack and cannot use it, you had better not bring it. So, I recommend you to bring the water-proof camera.

I ‘m on board with my water-proof camera!

From now on, I take pictures by the water-proof camera.

Let’s go!!!

After a while, we are in the avoiding point! Because the stream is narrow, the boat cannot go over big rocks and rock steps. We take off boats and pull them up, and start again! He is the chief guide, Franky!

The avoiding point again! Today’s applicants are 12, so little bit crowded. We just walk on the road for a few meter, however, we have to bring “my-boat,” too. It looks a swimming ring, but actually, it’s heavy enough. Maybe, it’s over 5 kg? Guides are busy also, so we cannot rely on them. Someone brings it on his head, other one rolls it to bring…

Drifting → Avoid rocks → Drifting → Avoid rocks… keep going on

On the way, there is the Flying Fox! The attraction is sliding down the wire that is set up above the river for 45 m.

If you are scared, you can walk on the pavement. The pulley and safety equipment is prepared only for one person, so it takes time to slide everybody. Enjoy taking picture and make fun of people! I just pass Flying Fox.

Maybe, this is the biggest drop point! Everybody love!!

Up of the drop point, there is the second attraction, Tarzan Jump! I didn’t want to, but I try for my job…

I had really scary experience in Tree Top but I have to try Tarzan Jump again now… I wear harness and stand on the step. How come, it’s high enough!! There is a big rock under me, though.

I was thinking that I just take picture for my job and quit jumping. (I’m sorry.) But, the staff behind me is ready for pushing me and count “1, 2, 3!!” I shout and jump (fell down)…
The harness holds my body, but I need to grab the rope, and my weight is heavy on my arms. After hang down for a while, the staff helped me.

If it’s not for job, I never want to try!!

Moreover, they said, “This attraction is now still on preparation, and it will start in June.” They gave me favor to try this attraction for my job… I wanted to know about it beforehand!!

We are already in the finishing point. Drifting river is just easy, but bringing the boat, Flyer Fox and Tarzan Jump made me very tired! And then, the promenade back to the shuttle car. There are no stairs, but uphill slope that we have to walk for 700 m… Nobody speak. There are good views on the way, but I even cannot take pictures!!

We finish the mountain promenade and back to the road. We are so happy and admire each other!! We share our feeling and go to the restaurant. (The road is under construction to make new road for cars.) It’s okay to either take shower first or eat lunch first. We keep exercise for 3 hours without drinking water and going to bathroom!! Wow…

Variety of dish is not so many, taste okay… Personally, I like it. (I like all food.)
Thank you very much, canyontubing!

Probably, only Hiro-chan introduces canyontubing. I heard that it is the healing activity to drift river by the swimming ring. BUT, the information was wrong!! Drifting itself is easy, but besides drifting, we had to climb up and down, bring boat to avoid rocks, try hard attractions… So, overall, you need lots of energy to join the tour.

Many activity companies offer rafting many times in one day in Ayung River. However, in Siap River, only canyontubingoffers activity. You must be excited to flow down the unexplored jungle river. In addition, Siap River combines to Ayung River on downstream, but the route of canyontubinghas the clear water and beautiful.

They are creating a new attraction and new road; canyontubingwill be improving. They just started activities from the end of 2008, so they are still organizing their service. But, if you want to enjoy wild adventure rather than the activities for tourists, you should try canyontubing!
